Quarryville Artists Captures First at LCAA Exhibit
STRASBURG -- Judge for the Lancaster County Art Association's "Strasburg 275th Anniversary Exhibit" that opened on Sunday, August 3 was local watercolor artist Dale Ziegler. He awarded First Place in the Professional Category to Quarryville artist Carol Herr for "All American", an oil on linen painting of a sundappled Strasburg porch adorned with bunting.

Ziegler said, “This piece captures the theme completely, I love the dappled light and the brushwork.”

Forty-one artworks in a variety of media, all on the subject of the town of Strasburg will hang in the Kauffman Gallery of the Association until September 4. Strasburg houses and businesses, the local landscape, and trains are popular subjects in this exhibit. The media used to depict Strasburg ranges from traditional watercolors, oils and acrylics to pastels, colored pencil, and photography and to the less frequently encountered medium of encaustic.

Ziegler said, “It is an exceptional show and it was very difficult to pick the award winners. I didn’t judge by the medium but the quality of the work. There were some fine pieces in the show that didn’t get awards. I picked works that I felt best reflected the Strasburg theme.”

Dale Ziegler is an award winning artist who is best known for his watercolors of Lancaster County and the Amish community. He studied at the Philadelphia School of Industrial Art after 3 years of Army service in World War II. A signature member of the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, he is also an honorary life member of both the Baltimore Watercolor Society and the Philadelphia Water Color Society. His work has been featured in The Artist’s Magazine. At 83 he continues to paint everyday.

Hanging concurrently at the LCAA with the Strasburg Anniversary Exhibit is an exhibit of photographs of trains by Ephrata photographer R. Neil Gruber. Both exhibits will continue until September 4. The LCAA is located at 149 Precision Ave. in Strasburg. For more information, call the LCAA at 687-7061. Regular hours at the Association are Wednesday to Sunday from 1 to 5 PM.
