New Providence Rodeo Star Takes First at Farm Show Rodeo
HARRISBURG -- A New Providence teen took first place in Team Roping and steer wrestling at the Pennsylvania High School Rodeo on Saturday, January 5, at the 2008 Pennsylvania Farm Show. Tim Williams finished in first place in the first go-round for team roping and first place in steer wrestling during the second go-round. His team roping partner was Katie Schock, Wrightsville.

Williams, a senior at Solanco High School, competed in steer wrestling, calf roping and team roping. In last year's National High School Rodeo, Tim finished fifth in the nation in steer wrestling.

Tyler Waltz, a junior at Jersey Shore High School in Lycoming County, took five top honors at the Pennsylvania High School Rodeo on Saturday, January 5, at the 2008 Pennsylvania Farm Show.

Wartz placed first in Bareback, Steer Wrestling, and Saddle Bronc contests during the Saturday afternoon competition. In the evening contest, he prevailed again in Saddle Bronco and earned a first place finish in Team Roping.  According to Waltz, the Farm Show is a great place to hold the High School Rodeo. Most of high school rodeo contests occur in quiet arenas with few spectators, a vast contrast to the huge crowd that filled the Large Arena to cheer on rodeo participants. Waltz appreciates the enthusiastic crowd.

“I look forward to this competition every year at Farm Show,” said Waltz. “There is a lot of energy in this group. When the crowd really gets going, I get chills down my back.”

Even with chills down his back, Waltz has reason to smile. According to the rodeo association’s current standings, Waltz is first in points in both bareback and bull riding, and fourth in steer wrestling. To qualify for the national competition, a rider must rank in the top four in Pennsylvania point standings. Waltz has competed at nationals for the past two years. He hopes to qualify this year for the National Championship held in New Mexico.

With his drive and determination, this cowboy is sure to achieve high ranks. “I’m always going to try to do better,” Waltz said. “There is always room for improvement.”
