Cutler's Commentary: Primary is Approaching
By Bryan Cutler, State Representative, 100th Legislative District
HARRISBURG
-- With the Primary Election approaching on Tuesday, April 22, it is time to register to vote. Those who would like to participate in the primary must be registered by March 24. Remember, because Pennsylvania has a closed primary system, you can only vote in the election of the party for which you are registered.

Another important election deadline is on April 15, when civilian absentee ballot applications are due. The last day for County Boards of Elections to receive completed absentee ballots is April 18.

If you are a first-time voter or are voting for the first time in a new location, you will need to present identification before voting. Approved forms of photo identification include:
  • ID issued by any Commonwealth agency.
  • ID issued by the U.S. government.
  • U.S. passport.
  • U.S. Armed Forces ID.
  • PA driver’s license or ID card issued by PennDOT.
  • Student ID.
  • Employee ID.

Approved forms of non-photo identification must include the name and address of the elector and include:
  • Voter’s identification card issued by the voter registration commission.
  • Non-photo ID issued by the Commonwealth.
  • Non-photo ID issued by the U.S. government.
  • Firearm permit.
  • Current utility bill.
  • Current bank statement.
  • Current paycheck.
  • Government check.

Because Pennsylvania holds one of the latest primaries in the nation, in past years the party nominees have already been decided. This year Pennsylvania could be more of a factor than ever in determining who will compete for the presidency in November, so make your voice heard and vote!
