Jan Sweger
Jan E. Sweger, age 70, of 345 Hilldale Road, Holtwood died Tuesday afternoon at Lancaster Regional Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. She and her husband, Rodney W. Sweger would have been married 49 years this July11, 2008. Jan was born in Martic Township, a daughter of the late Samuel C. and Dorothy E. Fulton Stevenson. She was retired from Community Services after 26 years of employment in the fiscal department, retiring in November 2007. Prior to that, she had worked for Dodge Cork and the former Penn Dairies. Jan was a 1955 graduate of Penn Manor High School. She was a member of Rawlinsville United Methodist Church and attended Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church where she was active in with the woman’s auxiliary. Jan was a lifetime member of the Rawlinsville Camp Meeting Association which she attended every year.
She was a former member of the Salisbury Lions Club and then became a very active member of Tucquan Lions Club where she served as secretary for the past four years. She received the highest honor in Lionism, the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. She also received the Lions Pennsylvania Fellow and Progressive Fellow awards. Jan served as past moderator with the girl’s seminar at Beacon Lodge, and was a lifetime member of the North East Lions Eye Bank, serving on the executive board. She served on the Lions ride for sight committee for the past 19 years. She received the Lion of the Year award in 2007 and served as first lady when her husband served as District Governor of Lions 14-D Lancaster-Lebanon Counties for the 1995-96 years. Jan also received four International Certificates of Appreciation. Her love of travel with her husband took her through the United States and Korea for Lions Club International. Jan was a member of the Red Hat Society.
She enjoyed going to the family log cabin in the mountains and enjoyed garage sales along the way. Jan had a passion for Longaberger Baskets and traveled to their home business in Ohio. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed watching cooking shows and ice skating on TV. Jan was a great friend to many people and will be sadly missed by all Lions that she met. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
Surviving beside her husband are three children, Curt Wayne husband of Barbara Rhoads Sweger of Lancaster, Diane E. Sweger of Lancaster, Rodney Scott Sweger of Holtwood; two grandchildren, Randy W. and Jen Sweger; two brothers, James Howard married to Carol Stevenson of DE, and Richard married to Gloria Stevenson of Drumore. She was preceded in death by a brother George Stevenson. Funeral services will be held from Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church, 673 Martic heights Road, Pequea, PA on Monday, June 9th at 11:00AM. Interment will follow in the adjoining church cemetery. Viewings will be at the Reynolds Funeral Home, 144 East State Street, Quarryville, PA on Sunday from 6:30 -8:30PM and again on Monday from 10:00AM until the time of service at the church.
