Area Legislators Vote
Against EC, Reader Takes Note
Dear Editor,
Seven area legislators voted to deny taking action on helping rape victims when they appear in the emergency room. Reps. Bear, Boyd, Creighton, Cutler, Denlinger, Hickernell and True voted to refuse to take action on House Bill 288, to ensure that rape victims get access to emergency contraception in all PA hospitals. That is despite the fact that 84 percent of Pennsylvanians support the legislation. It’s a serious issue, because women in Lancaster County are particularly at risk – Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center and Lancaster Regional Medical Center do not offer EC on a consistent basis, even though the medication could protect rape victims from becoming pregnant to the man who attacked them.
Speakers said they needed “more information”, but after four years of talking, two public hearings, countless media stories and several near compromises, it sounds more like they just want to avoid taking a vote. I hope you’ll consider writing about this to elucidate why these representatives are so afraid to vote on this issue. Below is information about the hospital survey for EC access and the vote count.
