Senatorial Candidate
Steve McDonald Releases Statement on Governor's Budget Address
HARRISBURG -- The following statement was released by Steve McDonald, Republican candidate for the 13th State Senate District, regarding
Tuesday's budget address by Governor Ed Rendell:
"(Tuesday) Governor Rendell urged lawmakers to increase state spending while the taxpayers of our state are asked to bear the burden. The Governor's budget calls for a 4.2% spending increase and two more tax increases.
Taxpayers in the 13th District are sick and tired of a state government that keeps spending and taxing while becoming more bureaucratic and inefficient.
The Governor is using higher spending and taxes as an excuse to stimulate the economy, but in reality, these "solutions" only stimulate government.
If we want to see real economic stimulus in Pennsylvania, we have to govern like Real Conservatives. That's why I'm calling on the Legislature to reject the Governor's tax increases and immediately pass a reduction in the Corporate Income Tax. Pennsylvania's Corporate Income tax is the 49th highest in the nation and cripples the economy of our state.
In addition to a cut in the Corporate Income Tax, the Legislature should also cut the Personal Income tax on Pennsylvania's workers.
Finally, the Legislature must address spending. The Commonwealth Foundation has identified $4 billion in unnecessary state spending. This is $4 billion that could be in taxpayers' pockets, rather than the State Treasury. The Legislature should pass an across-the-board spending cut of 5%.
When Harrisburg stops funding its spending increases on the backs of families and job-creating businesses, the people of Pennsylvania will see a real economic stimulus."
