Crash Closes Oak Bottom Road
By Jeanne Ruczhak-Eckman
EAST DRUMORE TOWNSHIP
-- A mid-afternoon crash closed down Oak Bottom Road between Route 222 (Fourth Street) and Route 372 (Buck Road) Wednesday, July 2. A motorcycle was traveling west on Buck Road when a pickup hauling a trailer crossed over Buck Road heading north on Oak Bottom Road. The two collided in the northbound lane of Buck Road.

One witness heard the cycle's horn blare just before the 3:40 p.m. crash. The cycle - a Can Am Spyder - is one of the new ones with two wheels in the front and one in the back. It is a large bike, weighing in at 697 pounds.

The driver - a white male - was treated by bystanders on the scene for shock and transported to Lancaster General Hospital (LGH) by Susquehanna Ambulance out of Quarryville. It was towed from the scene by Glenn's Auto Repairs on Beaver Valley Pike (Route 222) in New Providence.

The cycle struck the passenger front panel and door of a Ford F-250 hauling a trailer. The pickup, which had a Rock Solid Installation logo on the sides, was driven by 20 year old Skyler J. Derr. Derr said he crossed over Buck Road and the two vehicle made contact in the intersection. He said he never saw the cycle.

There was broken glass on the right side of the driver's seat in the cab of the truck. Derr had numerous small cuts on the right side of his face and his right arm.

Fire personnel from Quarryville Fire Company responded promptly to the scene. The ambulance crew lifted the cyclist onto a stretcher, grabbing his helmet, and transported him to LGH. Firefighters, seen here at right, cleaned up the scene before State Police arrived to investigate. Tpr. James Spencer arrived on scene at 4:06 p.m. He was soon joined by Tpr. Kelly Osborne-Filson, with the Criminal Investigative Unit.

Derr pled guilty last September to Disregard Traffic Control Device in Conestoga Township. In May of last year, he appeared before District Justice Stuart Mylin in Quarryville and pled guilty to speeding and failure to wear a seat belt in Martic Township.

UPDATE: The driver of the motorcycle, which State Police identified as a Road Tax 990, was Walter Rees of Holtwood. Rees, who sustained moderate injury, was wearing his helmet at the time of the collision. Derr was cited as a result of the incident.
