Barnstormers
LANCASTER --
Jordan Herr, the
younger son of
former manager
Tom Herr, has
been signed to a
contract by the
Lancaster
Barnstormers. Herr, 22, will forgo his senior season at the University of Pittsburgh to play for his hometown team. He batted .274 with five home runs and 32 RBIs for the Panthers this spring. The Hempfield High School grad stole 13 bases in his second year at Pitt.
In 2007, he hit .263 and stole nine bases. Herr was then drafted in the 41st round by the Chicago Cubs but opted to return to college. He was not drafted following this collegiate season.
He was working out with the ballclub and we were very impressed with him, said Keith Lupton, club vice president of baseball operations. He will help fill a need after Jarred Ball being signed with the Houston Astros organization.
Signing with the Barnstormers, he will become the third member of his immediate family to play professional baseball. His father was a longtime second baseman with the St. Louis Cardinals and member of their 1982, 85 and 87 World Series teams. Older brother Aaron, now 27, is currently the second baseman for the Louisville Bats, the Class AAA affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds.
