Phelps, Hoff Set New World Records in Swimming
BEIJING -- Both Michael Phelps and Katie Hoff set new world records in swimming last night at the US Olympic Swimming Team Trials.

Michael Phelps set a new world record of 4:05:25 on Sunday night at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Team Trials, breaking the previous 400-meter individual medley record he had previously set at the world championships in Australia. Ryan Lochte also rendered an excellent performance, finishing second with a time of 4:06.08, which was also faster than Phelps's former record of 4:06.22. Robert Margalis finished third, more than seven seconds behind Phelps and Lochte.

Katie Hoff broke the world record in the Women's 400m Individual Medley on Sunday night at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Team Trials, finishing in 4:31:12, 0.34 seconds faster than the previous record of 4:31.46 set by Stephanie Rice at the Australian Olympic trials in March. Elizabeth Beisel finished second with a time of 4:32.87.

Phelps began his swimming career at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club in Maryland. In 2000, being only 15 then, Phelps competed at the Summer Olympics in Sydney. In the 2004 Olympics in Athens, he won six gold and two bronze medals. He celebrates his 23rd birthday today. Originally from California, Hoff trained with Phelps in Baltimore. She placed 17th in the 200M IM in the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
